Impartial Independent Advice

Pensions can be an extremely complex area and often require specialist advice. It is vital, therefore, that you seek independent financial advice from suitably qualified advisers.

Use the services of an independent financial adviser, as they are not ‘tied’ to any one pension provider, but are working for you to provide impartial independent advice.

As if you were using any professional service, such as an accountant or solicitor, the cost of the advice cannot be estimated at outset until a financial assessment of your pension scheme has been undertaken. However, the first meeting either by telephone or face to face would initially be conducted free of charge.

To have an independent expert get in touch with you to offer initial advice, simply enter your details below.

Choose how your IFA is paid:

FEES: by paying the adviser a fee, either at an hourly rate or through a fee for the whole job. This is known as 'fees only' advice. Fees vary, typically from £75 to £150 an hour. The initial meeting is free of charge, where you can get to know each other.

COMMISSION: By paying indirectly through commission, which is deducted by the product provider from the products you may take out. Usually there is a commission charged for setting up a plan and there may also be annual commissions payable, known as trail or renewal commission which is payment for an on-going service, for example, an annual review of your plan, if you require this type of service.

FEES AND COMMISSION: By paying a combination of fees and commission. The adviser will rebate commission back into the financial product or offset it against the fee paid.

Everyone can choose to pay their Independent Financial Adviser (IFA) by a fee rather than commission, if they want to. In the past the majority of consumers tended to opt for commission. In the future there will be a shift towards more people paying fees and this will be explaiined in the information on your IFA's charging arrangements. Most importantly only an IFA has to offer a choice of payment options i.e. paying by fee or commision or a combination of the two. Tied and multi-tied agents don't have to offer you this choice, but some may.

How financial advisers are paid is currently under review as part of the FSA's Retail Distribution Review (RDR). It is likely there will be changes to the way advisers charge clients. We will update this page when the changes are introduced.
